Dr Lacy GilMurray - Veterinarian D.V.M. Veterinary Director

I grew up on the East Coast of the United States, where I have worked in veterinary hospitals since the age of 14. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland in the Honors College and then completed my doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Florida.

I have a special interest exotic animal medicine, husbandry, and surgery and have presented multiple case reports on bearded dragon and guinea pig medicine at the international exotic animal conference ExoticsCon, as well as an active member of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians and the Association of Avian Veterinarians. My other professional interests include dermatology, internal medicine, animal behavior, soft tissue surgery and ultrasonography.

My husband previously lived in Sydney, and convinced to me to move to Oz to raise our son in the sunny Newcastle beaches and wonderful community. At home I enjoy walks with my mastiff cross Luke, sharing my lap with my ginger cat Chewbacca, as well as traveling, scuba diving, camping, and yoga. I also enjoy skiing, baking, curling up with a good book, and I am an avid Star Wars fan.

Dr Alison Barrett - Veterinarian

I graduated from the University of Queensland in 1995 after first completing a degree in Medical Laboratory Science. Early in my career I spent considerable time in the UK and have extensive experience and a special interest in rabbits and other small furry pets. I moved to the Newcastle area in 2010 and have never looked back. I fell in love with the beautiful beaches, the lake and all that the area has to offer.

I live with my partner and our two naughty rescue cats Biscuit and Mouse. When I’m not at work I enjoy travel, mostly to see wildlife and following my beloved Brisbane Broncos and Liverpool football clubs.

Dr Jenny Warland - Veterinarian

I graduated from the University of Sydney in 1995 and have worked in small animal practice in the Newcastle area for the last 22 years. I have a special interest in surgery, and also love getting to know both clients and their beautiful pets. Animals have always brought me so much love and joy, so I feel very blessed to be able to spend my life caring for them.

Our house has been a home to many different pets (and recovering wildlife) over the years, and is currently shared by my beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog, Pepper, two rescue cats, Pebbles and Smudge, and lots of tropical fish. I have two busy teenage children and also help my husband manage his legal practice. When I’m not at work, I love meeting up with friends, doing art/craft projects, I lead a women’s home group for my church and sing in the church band. I have a great appreciation for good coffee & am a frequent visitor to our wonderful local cafes.

I have lived in Newcastle my whole life and loved growing up with many animals around me.

Currently I am living with my 2 doggies, Chanel a Maltese X and Bentley a British bulldog.

In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends, traveling (when the day comes…), trying new things, dancing and taking my little ones to the dog beach or park.

Lorena Sharrock- Veterinary Nurse

I joined the Dr Paws Team in 2019 as a work placement student and graduated with a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in early 2021.  I have always had a passion for animals so I decided to extend my career to include our furry and feathered friends.  I have a particular interest in pet nutrition, radiology and dental care due to 20 years experience in the dental industry.  The variety of animals that we get to see and treat at Dr Paws is fantastic.  Being part of a team  that loves being a part of your pets health care is so important to me .  I have 2 rescue dogs named Felix and Zeus and 3 teenage children which keeps me busy in my life around the lake.  I love being outdoors enjoying what our beautiful country has on show.

Eleanor Foley - Receptionist

I'm currently studying to become a vet nurse here at Kotara and since working with this amazing team I've learnt so much already.  I have a keen interest in some of the more weird and wonderful animal that come into our clinic as I have owned exotics in the past.

I'm not a Newcastle local but have been leaving here for just over a year and feel very at home in the area. I spend most of my spare time swimming at the beach and running some of the amazing trails Newie have to offer. Unfortunately I don't have a dog and the moment just a fish but I spend a lot of time with my sister's cattle dog cross, Gyda. I'm looking forward to what the future holds with me here at the clinic and getting to know more of the Newcastle area along with the amazing locals and all there lovely pets.

Mel Kerr - Puppy trainer

Cert IV Companion Animal Services (Dog Training & Behaviour) Delta Institute

I’m Mel, the Puppy Trainer at Dr Paws Kotara, and I’ve had over ten years’ experience helping owners and their dogs.

Understanding our dogs and helping owners to do the same is my biggest passion. I find that once owners have a better understanding of their dog, and their dogs behaviour, the relationship between dog and owner strengthens, and almost everything else falls into place. This job is a privilege and I consider it an honour that people allow me into their lives and trust me to help guide them through this journey with their dog.

I’m lucky to share my life with two dogs, a lorikeet and four chickens. Merve is a very serious eight-year old  Kelpie x German Shepherd, his nickname is The Sheriff, as he’s the fun police and likes to make sure everyone is behaving themselves. Merve spends his days patrolling the yard, taking long walks and ensuring everyone is safe. Grace is our five-year old crazy little Whippet x Boxer, her nicknames are  Gracey, Tiger, Devil Dog and Little Munchkin. She likes to keep us on our toes and entertained daily. Grace likes to spend her days lazing on the most comfortable thing she can find and taking likes long walks. Phoenix is our seventeen-year old Lorikeet, who likes flying through the house, native flowers, kisses from her humans and taking nice warm  showers. The Girls are our four chickens, who spend their days scratching around the yard and laying us the most delicious eggs.

In my spare time I hang out with my dogs. If I can’t do that I’ll hang out with other people’s dogs!
